Timberlake Consultants invite you to attend the following 1-day, hands-on course to be held in New York on 5 December 2013.

This course will provide an introduction to Stata 13. This course will provide an immersion into programming and Stata. Formal computing language concepts will be presented. Exercises involving these constructs will be programmed by the participants. Special Stata programming and statistical features/environments will be discussed and utilized. This one-day course is intended for the scientist needing the programming and data management skills necessary to independently work with the advanced statistical tools available in Stata. It will prepare new Stata users for advanced courses. Topics to be covered include basic Stata commands, data cleaning, and missing data imputation. The course will be hands-on.

The course is designed to refresh returning statistical package users, new, or beginner-level users of Stata.

Quick-start introductory Stata session with discussion and programming asides on environment, do and ado files and documentation. Discussion of data types, data attributes and formats. Exercises will involve importing data, managing, reshaping and merging data files. Formal discussion of logical expressions, operators, operator precedence and functions. Example command sequences will be programmed. Pre/Postfix commands, working across variables and subsetting. Working with missing values, and an overview of statistical tests and graphics.


Prefix commands for dummy variables and then regression will lead to using returned results in programming exercises. Jackknifed, bootstrapped and Monte Carlo tests will be performed. Extensions to generate (egen) will be introduced. Grouping and aggregating. Several methods of missing value analysis and imputation will be introduced. Complex survey designs will lead to using weights in statistical procedures. The time series environment will be introduced along with some graphics. Creating thematic maps for data visualization.
